Purpose on the Peaceful Side
Junkies, Inc. — Purpose on the Peaceful Side
For nearly two decades, we have worked quietly in this community fighting addiction and walking with families through some of their darkest seasons. It is not just the individual who struggles — it is the parents who lie awake at night, the children who grow up too fast, the spouses who do not know what tomorrow holds.
Over the years, we have helped pay for treatment, stood in courtrooms, supported families in crisis, and helped men and women transition out of long-term recovery programs into stable work and responsibility. Junkies exists not only to help individuals rebuild their lives, but to serve the families navigating recovery, reentry, and restoration.
Through the belief and support of Hearts and Hands Board Chair, Sandy Headrick — who believed deeply in the work we had been doing in the community and its long-term impact — we were asked to step in and make this work more visible in a sustainable way to serve the community. She believed the work should not remain hidden or quiet. The community needed to know. She also believed the thrift store needed to remain open to continue serving local families. Her conviction was to preserve what had been built by the volunteers of Hearts & Hands, keep the doors open, and bring this mission to the surface so more people could understand and be part of the work already happening behind the scenes.
Junkies Thrift would not be here without Hearts & Hands. We moved quickly to formalize the nonprofit structure, finalize our 501(c)(3), and establish Junkies Thrift as the funding arm that would sustain and expand the recovery and family support efforts already in motion. Today, every donation received and every purchase made helps carry that legacy forward — strengthening families, creating opportunity, and building purpose on the Peaceful Side.
Junkies is built on the belief that recovery is more than sobriety — it is responsibility. It is learning to show up on time, work harder and longer than most, rebuild trust, and understand that when you walk into a workplace, you represent more than just yourself. You represent the company, the mission, the Lord, and every person who has fought and won the battle of addiction before you.
We teach integrity in the workplace. We teach consistency. We teach ownership. We believe meaningful work restores dignity and that strong habits build strong futures.
At the same time, we work to remove the stigma attached to those who have made mistakes. A past does not have to define a future. With structure, accountability, and opportunity, people can rise above average — and we train them to do exactly that.
We are not simply operating a thrift store. We are building people who strengthen workplaces and families across our community.
Townsend still feels like a true community. People care about one another. They support local businesses. They show up when someone is in need. There is a deep respect here for faith, family, and hard work — and that foundation matters.
Townsend is known as the Peaceful Side of the Smokies, but what I love most is that beneath that peaceful reputation is resilience. This community has weathered challenges, stood together, and continued to invest in the next generation. That kind of place is worth building in. And it is exactly the kind of community where purpose can take root and grow.
